Bottle of first oil, discovered in Libya

Nemanja Cvijanović sent us this message: “Prva boca nafte. Talijanski istražitelj koji je u Libiji u potrazi za vodom pronašao naftu. Jedna žena u Italiji ima tu bocu s prvom libijskom naftom. Zanimljivo.

Indeed, in Rome Maria Emanuela Desio, the daughter of Ardito Desio still keeps the bottle of the first oil ever discovered in Libya. Her father was a geologist, researcher, adventurer and an alpinist. In 1938, in search of water, he found oil in the Libyan desert. Due to the upcoming war and the costs of preparations for pumping, the Italians didn’t profit from this discovery.

RAI presented the bottle in one of its TV documentaries: “Maria Emanuela Desio, figlia del grande geologo Ardito Desio, custodisce a casa sua un cimelio prezioso, la prima bottiglia di petrolio estratta in Libia da suo padre, assieme a centinaia, migliaia di altri documenti che meriterebbero un posto in un museo.”
